The guidelines are ready!

Our project aims to promote reading among young people, using an innovative approach to motivate 9 to 15-year-old pupils to read more, enjoy the experience of reading and as a result, improve literacy. A milestone of the project is the publication of the first draft of the methodological Guidelines (one of the main outputs), which are now available in the "Resources" section of the website.

Guidelines, an overview

Within the Guidelines, a chapter concerns the importance of reading together and the relationship between the digital ecosystem and the practice of reading. Then the Guidelines present an in-depth analysis on the activities that are going to be developed by partners throughout the project. At the same time, we offer suggestions on how to organise small reading tandems, on their composition, and on the tools that the project will make available to them. Particular attention is given to the role of teachers, parents and school libraries in promoting reading tandems and coordinating their activities, as well as fostering the creation of a robust and lively reading community.

An important section deals with the enhancement of learning experiences by means of diverse, inclusive reading, drawing strength from cultural and social differences, handling special educational needs, recognising and respecting all gender identities and avoiding all kind of discrimination. Finally, the Guidelines address the issue of privacy protection, in a context where the growing use of digital tools among young people raises several questions relating to e-safety, and offer suggestions on how such issues are to be handled.

Enjoy reading! And of course, we look forward to receiving your comments and suggestions.

And a suggestion for the festive season

The Guidelines suggest a set of actors and tools that can support the reading tandem. Among them, parents have a key role and a reading diary can be a tool for a small family reading group. In the preliminary phase of ReadTwinning, and in the COVID-19 emergency, the role of families is very important especially for younger readers. That is why the project guidelines suggest the creation of reading tandems involving children and their parents, or siblings, or grandparents. So why not try it now, during the festive season? The book selected does not have to be new or famous, nor does it have to be fiction, and it should be chosen together by the participants in the reading tandem. It could be a book from the home library: a collection of poems, for example, or a history book, or a graphic novel, or even a recipe book. The important thing is that the family finds time to read - either out loud together or silently, each on his or her own - and that they then exchange opinions, compare the pages they liked best and those they liked least, take inspiration from what they have read to create an ideal cover or an attractive book trailer, or simply to writing a reading diary together.
